James Coffey, he was born in estimated 1843 in Ireland. During the Civil War, he enlisted in August of 1861 into Company A of the 14th US Infantry, and mustered out in February of 1867. Don’t have much
on this man, he ended up in the Salinas Valley, his wife’s name was Ellen who passed away before him on August 22nd, 1889. James Coffey died on October 6th, 1906. He was a member of the James Blair
Steedman GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) Post # 56 based out of the city of Salinas. He is buried in the IOOF “Garden of Memories Memorial Park” in the old section in the GAR PLOT in Salinas, California.

Death of G.A.R. Veteran
James Coffey, a veteran of the Civil War, died at Pacific Grove at noon today, aged sixty five years. The deceased enlisted in Co. A. Fourteenth U.S. Infantry, in August, 1861, and was discharged in February, 1867. He was a member of General James B. Steedman Post, No. 56, G.A.R. and will be buried under the auspices of the post.
