PVT: Stephen Hatch, Sr.: 1st California Infantry, Company D. Civil War Veteran of the “California Column” Stephen Hatch was born on February 22, 1835 in the state of Ohio. He e nlisted into Company D, of the 1st California Infantry out of Downey, California on September 20th, 1861 and was mustered out of Las Cruces, New Mexico on September 13th, 1864. His wife was Ellen G. His children: Harry, Walter, Stephen, Alice, Clarra, and Estella. He died in Watsonville, California on December 11th, 1910. And is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Santa Cruz, California. A member of the Grand Army of the Republic, the precise post # is not known at this time. Stephen Hatch, Sr. is also the brother of Isaac Hatch of the 8th Infantry Company A. (who is buried at San Carlos Catholic Cemetery in Monterey, California. Their Father, George Hatch is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Salinas, CA.).
