BROWN, JULIUS J (1832-1896) IOOF (Unidentified Newspaper Dec 8? 1896) DIED: BROWN- Near Salinas City, at the county hospital, Dec 7, 1896, Julius J. Brown, a native of New York and a veteran of the civil war, aged 64. Funeral under the direction of the G.A.R. from the Undertaking parlors of W.M. Vanderhurst at 3 o’clock this afternoon. Interment I.O.O.F. cemetery. (Salinas Index Dec. 10, 1896) Death of an Old Soldier Julius J. Brown, a Union veteran died at the county hospital about 2:30 o’clock Monday morning. He was 64 years of age and a native of the state of New York. Before it became necessary for him to enter the hospital he lived in the vicinity of Monterey, where his widow, Mrs. Mary E. Brown, still resides. Three days before his death, realizing that his end was near, he dictated a letter to his wife, giving her minute directions in regard to some business affairs and bidding her a fond and final farewell. In the letter to his wife was a note addressed to Capt. James T. Lambert, Lamberthville, Crittenden Co. Ark., containing these words; “Your friend, J.J. Brown will be dead when you receive this letter.” Also the following. Mr. Michaelis, Monterey- My government voucher is in the Monterey bank. If I should die before I get my certificate, I would like to have you help my wife get it. Monterey bank: Please let Mr. Michaelis have my certificate. Julius J. Brown. The funeral took place under the auspices of Gen James B. Steedman Post. G.A.R. from the undertaking parlors of W.M. Vanderhurst, at 3 o’clock this afternoon. Interment in I.O.O.F. cemetery.
