Veteran Dies at the Letterman Hospital in San Francisco Word of the death of John Burkett, the aged porter at the Pacific Grove Hotel, was received yesterday afternoon by Manager Foster of the hotel. The deceased passed his last hours in the Letterman hospital at the San Francisco Presidio, where he was taken a week ago. He was 78 years of age and had been suffering from a cancer, the ailment becoming so serious that he was sent to the hospital in the city last week. A G.A.R. veteran and member of Lucius Fairchild Post, G.A.R., he fought with honor all through the Civil war, serving in the Sixth Massachusetts regiment. After the war he wars for seven years in the service on the plains as first sergeant on the plains as first sergeant with the Sixth and later with the Seventh Cavalry. Coming to California several years ago he has been employed with the Pacific Improvement company for over six years, both at Del Monte and at the Pacific Grove Hotel. He was a straightforward, upright citizen, a man respected and admired by all who knew him. He is survived by a wife and daughter. The body is to be shipped to Pacific Grove today, no arrangements for the funeral having been made pending the arrival of relatives. He is the second G.A.R. veteran of the peninsula to pass to the great beyond within the past week, the late Charles Bixby having died in this city only last Wednesday evening. (Pacific Grove Daily Cypress May 11, 1915) Burkett Funeral Thursday Afternoon Relatives of G.A.R. Veteran Expected Home For Services. The funeral of the late John Burkett, former porter at the Pacific Grove Hotel, will take place on Thursday afternoon from the residence of the deceased, 235 Granite street. The funeral is delayed pending the arrival of relatives. Besides a widow, the deceased is survived by three daughters, Mrs. May Taylor of El Paso, Texas; Mrs. Jessie Dunham of Sioux City, Iowa, and Miss Rachel M. Burkett of Seattle, Wash. All are expected here for the funeral. The body was shipped from the Letterman hospital at the San Francisco Presidio to the Grove Sunday. The ritualistic services of Lucius Fairchild Post G.A.R., will be conducted at the Grove. (Monterey Daily Cypress May 13, 1915) G.A.R. Attention Pacific Grove, May 12th. Comrades: You are hereby requested to assemble at post headquarters on Thursday afternoon, May 13th, at two o’clock, to attend the funeral of Comrade John Burkett. The interment will be in the soldier’s plot, at El Carmelo Cemetery, Pacific Grove. Services will be conducted at the house, 235 Granite street, by the Rev. H. R. Snyder, at 2:30 o’clock. the post will conduct the burial service at the cemetery. Captain Swazey, post adjutant at the Presidio of Monterey has detailed a firing squad and trumpeter to be present to fire the salute and sound taps at the grave. By order of D.T.
