CASSIDY, JAMES (1843-1915) Moss Landing (Salinas Daily Index Feb 18, 1910) Veteran Returned Home Improved in Health James Cassidy, a well known old veteran of the Civil War, who had been absent at Monterey for several weeks, arrived home last evening much improved in health. Mr. Cassady was treated at the post hospital, Presidio of Monterey, for muscular rheumatism. He states that medical attention and medicines were furnished him without cost, but he was required to pay for his rations at the rate of 40 cents per day. Mr. Cassidy was formerly an inmate of the Soldiers Home at Sawtelle. (Monterey Daily Cypress June 19, 1915) Veteran Soldier Dies At Sawtelle Father of Monterey Woman Passes at Ripe Old Age James Cassidy, G.A.R. veteran and former resident of Salinas, died at the Soldier’s Home at Sawtelle Thursday morning at the advanced age of 72 years. He was a native of New York state and served with distinction during the Civil War. Settling in Salinas he lived there until about four or five years ago, when he was taken to the Sawtelle Home. He is survived by two children. Earl Cassidy of Hanford, formerly a member of the Salinas police force, and a daughter, Mrs. Nell McEachren of Monterey. The funeral was conducted yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at Sawtelle with burial in the Sawtelle soldiers cemetery at the request of the deceased.
