All persons donating to this site retain the rights to their own work. HAWKINS, JOHN H (1842-1901) IOOF (Salinas Daily Index March 13, 1901) Sudden Death Last Night About 11 o’clock last nigh John H. Hawkins was suddenly attacked with a hard congestive chill at his home on John street. Dr. Parker who lives in the neighborhood was summoned and he sent for Dr.. T.C. Edwards, but medical skill was of no avail and the stricken man died soon after the arrival of the physicians. The deceased was 62 years of age and a Union veteran. He was the father of Al Hawkins, the well known Salinas drayman. (Salinas Daily Index March 14, 1901) Death of J.H. Hawkins Funeral Will Take Place art 2 o’clock This Afternoon The funeral of John Henry Hawkins who died suddenly Tuesday night, will take place under the auspices of James B. Steedman Post No. 56, G.A.R. from the family residence on John street at 2 o’clock this afternoon. Interment in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. The deceased was born in Maine February 20, 1842 and was consequently in his sixtieth year when he died. He received a common school education in his native state and later came West as far as Minnesota. On October 24, 1864, he enlisted as a private in the First Regiment of Minnesota Heavy Artillery, and was promoted to corporeal January 1, 1865. He received an honorable discharge September 26, 1865. Mr. Hawkins was a member of Garfield Post No. 68, G.A.R. of St. Paul, Minnesota, and had been in Salinas about six months. A widow and two sons survive him. Coroner Muller held an inquest over the remains last evening, the jury being composed of Frank Hiserman, Frank Ward, Frank Baker, A.C. McLaughlin and Oscar Olsen. A verdict of death from natural causes was rendered.
