MURRAY, ABRAHAM G (1841-1916) Pacific Grove (Pacific Grove Daily Review August 30, 1916) Death Calls Aged Minister of the Gospel Rev. Abraham G. Murray, a resident of Pacific Grove, passed away shortly after eight o’clock, Wednesday morning, August 30th, at his late residence 714 Ninth street. He was born March 2, 1841, his father being Scotch and his mother German descent. He was one of a family of fifteen children, eight sons and seven daughters. He was educated in the common and graded schools and was a teacher in the public schools for some years, one of his certificates dating November 23 1869, he having taught six terms before that date. He followed the occupations of farmer and teacher but spent most of his life in the ministry. He was married march 23, 1865 to Sarah Emma Sargeant at Indianapolis Ind. Three children were born to them: Morton C. Murray now living in Oklahoma; Theresa Pear, now Mrs. K Frankhuaser, living in Chicago; the youngest son Arthur W.S. died. The wife of the deceased died December 19, 1905. He lived near Peru, Ind until 1872, then removed to Kokomo, Ind, October 1872. In November 1874 he moved to Terre Haute, Ind., from thence to Kansas in 1876, and to Oklahoma in 1889. As a minister in the Methodist church he held the following charges, Kansas Conference Prenz and (illegible) 1876-1878; Ossage City, 1880-81; Lenexa, 1881-82; Marysville 1883-1884; Centralia, 1884-85; Alma 1885-1887; Chapin, 1887-88; Wellsville 1888-89; Oklahoma Conference: Oklahoma City, 1889-92; Presiding Elder South Oklahoma District, January 15, 1894; Pawhuska, 1894; October , 1898 was appointed to Indian mission at Ossage City where he served a number of years during which time he resided at Pawnee, Oklahoma. He the served other charges as follows: Kildare, 1896; Strand 1897; where he married Miss Millicent Cloud a school teacher of that place, and one child Abram Donald was born of this marriage. August 4, 1909 at Shawnee. In 1908 he was stationed at Shawnee, 1909 at Snyder; 1910 Billings, and 1911 he superannuated and came to California taking up his residence at Elverta where he supplied a little church and erected a small church building. For the last ten years or so he has lived i Pacific Grove where he has resided until his death The deceased has no inconsiderate record as a soldier of his country. He enlisted October 8, 1861 at Peru Indiana was mustered in October 15th of the same year at Indianapolis. His original rank was a private. he belonged to Co K of the 51st Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted October 15 1861 to First Sergeant Co. G same regiment and to First Lieutenant June 6, 1863. He was discharged January 25, 1865 at Huntsville, Alabama by reason of resignation. He was a prisoner with the surrender of Colonel Streights command 1863. He was paroled and exchanged June 12th following. He was in command of his regiment and the 73rd Indiana at Camp Morton, Indiana from July 1, 1863 until October, 1863. During this the regiments were again equipped for service and did guard duty over rebel prisoners quartered at Camp Morton at Indianapolis, Indiana, where there were (4600? illegible) prisoners. After taking his regiment to Nashville, he served as adjutant of the regiment until he resigned January 25, 1865. He participated in the following battles: Shiloh, Corinth, Perrysville, Stone River, Balls Bluff, Gibson’s Farm, Missionary Ridge, Strawberry Plains, Pulaski, Columbia, Tennessee, Franklin and Nashville, Beside numerous smaller engagements called skirmishes. While living in Pacific Grove, Rev. Murray has preached in most all the pulpits, taught in the Sunday School and he has been an interested citizen in all that pertains to the city. The funeral service will be held from the Methodist church Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and the remains shipped east. The body is now at J.K. Paul undertaking parlors.
