Stansbury May be Postmaster A dispatch from Washington under the date of March 14 makes it appear that Mr. R. Stansbury’s friends will soon be congratulating him on his appointment as post master at Pacific Grove. “In discussing the matter of postmaster of Pacific Grove, Cal., today with representative Needham, of California, President Roosevelt informed Mr. Needham that, all other things being equal, he preferred to give the preference in such appointments to soldiers of the Civil war. He indicated that for the particular office under consideration he probably would appoint Mr. Stansbury, an ex-Union soldier, instead of J.A. Pell, a business man, who had been endorsed by the Republican organization. (Pacific Coast Daily Review December 19, 1910) M.R. Stansbury Passed Away Sunday M.R. Stansbury, died at his home 392 Spruce avenue in this city on Sunday afternoon about 4 o’clock. He had been in poor health for several years, but he had been around town as usual until about a month ago. since that time he failed quite rapidly until the end came. He would have been seventy eight years of age had he lived until next April, as he was born on April 3, 1833. His native State was Tennessee, and he was born in Washington county. when he was about eighteen months old his parents moved to Illinois and he remained a resident of that state until 1875 when he removed to Missouri, where he remained for seven years, after which he resided for twelve years in Kansas. In 1894 he first came to Pacific Grove, but he went from here to Capitola, where he served as postmaster for two years. He came here from that place ten years ago and he has since made the grove his home. He conducted a grocery store for some time, but finally sold his business and a short time later was appointed postmaster, which office he held for four years. He was a railway mail clerk for twelve years while living in the east. He leaves two daughters, Miss Gertrude Stansbury, and Mrs. JO Leek, and one son Harry Stansbury. His wife died in 1908. the funeral will be held from the Methodist Episcopal church on Tuesday at 2:30 o’clock and remains will be interred in the local cemetery. ATTEN G.A.R. Eli Fisher, Adj. (Pacific Grove Daily Review December 20, 1910) Funeral of M.R. Stansbury Held Today The funeral of the late M.R. Stansbury was held this afternoon from the Methodist Episcopal church under the direction of undertaker J.K. Paul. Rev. Leslie M. Burwell, pastor of the church was the officiating clergyman. Loving friends brought numerous beautiful floral offerings in attention of the esteem in which they held the deceased during his life. During the civil war the deceased served his country as first lieutenant of Company K. 107th Illinois volunteers, and his comrades of Lucius Fairchild Post Grand Army of the Republic were present in a body to pay the last tribute of respect to their honored member. The members of Lucius Fairchild Relief Corps were also in attendance. The remains were laid to rest in El Carmelo Cemetery. The pall bearers were James Harper, Geo. Quentel, H.G. Jorgensen, E.B. DeForest, E.E. Long, E.C. Hurlbert.
