All persons donating to this site retain the rights to their own work. WOLFE, JOSEPH R (1840-1915) Pacific Grove (Monterey Daily Cypress July 29, 1915) Minister Has Answered Call Rev. Joseph R. Wolfe Passes Away After Illustrious Career Rev. Joseph R. Wolfe, superannuated Methodist Minster and a man whose career was remarkably illustrious, passed away at his home, 156 Monterey avenue, Pacific Grove, early yesterday morning, aged 75 years. Dr. Wolfe was born in Bond county, Ill., on November 23, 1840. He received his education in that state and was graduated from a university in the middle west, after which he practiced law. During the Civil War he served for three years with the 107th Illinois regiment and mustered out with the rank of captain. In 1870 Rev. Wolfe entered the ministry in the state of Nebraska and was transferred to Lockwood, California, in 1883, where he remained for a period of three years. It was in 1905 that Rev. Wolfe was declared superannuated and since that time has made his home in Pacific Grove. He resided for a time in Seaside. Deceased was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and was a member of Lockwood Lodge I.O.O.F. He was chaplain for the department of California of the G.A.R. and was past commander of Lucius Fairchild Post of Pacific Grove. Funeral Tomorrow Dr. Wolfe is survived by his wife, three sons, and a daughter, J.A. Wolfe of Pacific Grove, F.A. Wolfe of San Jose, Philip Wolfe of Pasadena and Miss Jennie Wolfe. The G.A.R. and Pacific Grove Odd Fellows will be in charge of the funeral, which is to be held from the Methodist church tomorrow morning at 10:30 o’clock. Rev. Leslie M. Burwell will officiate. Interment will be in Pacific Grove Cemetery.
