Daniel Patrick Donahoe

The following are notes on Daniel P. Donahoe compiled by Elly Walters and Kathy Sedler. Daniel is Elly's paternal grandfather. If you have any further information regarding this family, please contact Elly. (This page will be added to as further information becomes available.)

Daniel was born on 13 June, 1849, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He came to the United States and was naturalized as an American citizen on 21 August, 1871. It is unknown who Daniel's first wife was. He was married again to Catherine (Kate) Kearns on 4 July, 1896 at 6 a.m., as the train was leaving early that morning and they did not wish to delay their departure. Kate was born in California about 1869, of Irish parents who emigrated to California. Daniel's parents were also of Irish birth. He stood 5 feet 6 1/4 inches tall, and had blue eyes and black hair in his youth.

Daniel and Kate had four children, all born in Yuba County. Francis Louis, born 23 Jun 1897; Lucile Mildred, born 16 Feb. 1899; Mary Agnes, born 21 June 1901; and Catherine Phyllis (who went by Phyllis), born 27 July 1903. In 1904 the family moved to San Francisco. Daniel died in San Francisco on 17 January 1905, leaving Kate with four small children. He was 55 years, 7 months and 4 days old at his passing. He was brought to Marysville for burial, and lays at rest in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery family plot. Kate and the children not only felt the loss of Daniel, but then, in 1906, they were in San Francisco for the big earthquake, which left that city in total devastation.

In 1910, Kate and her children are living at 2174 Post Street, in San Francisco, where Kate ran a boarding house, with four other families residing there. In 1920, Kate and her four children are renting a home on 2840 Pine Street in San Francisco. Francis (Frank) is working as an insurance clerk, Lucile is a typist for the government, and Mary is a clerk for the government. Frank, being the only son, helped his mother and sisters by selling newspapers as a young boy, and helping his family out financially as he could.

All of the children stayed in the San Francisco area and died there. Frank died 21 Nov. 1960, Lucile Donahoe Manning died on 17 April 1955, Mary died 5 May 1967, and Phyllis on 5 November 1970. Catherine (Kate) passed away in San Francisco on 4 August 1923 and is buried next to her husband in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Marysville. She never remarried.
