James M. Newell, Family Files Submitted by Natalie Schutz [natalie.schutz@sbcglobal.net] July 24, 2009 Life Story of RevLife Story of Rev. James M. Newell, D.D. An Autobiography Born November 21, 1840 Died June 25, 1932 Edited by Margy Henry 1977 Published by Margy Henry Escondido, California 92025 An autobiography written for his children, Grandchildren and great-grand-children In July 1931 in his ninety-first year. MY FAMILY I have been telling my life as if it had been all my own. It has not even been half my own. A whole lot of it at first came from two devoted and splendid sisters and from others. Later it has been combined and associated with two splendid women. Neither of these women needed a man to give them a place in the world. They were not vines needing to be supported by being twined about some strong tree — they could stand alone. But as the fashion of the world goes, they thought best to join up with a man and make a team. My first wife, Harriet Atwood Newell, was a very capable teacher. She was interested in all the worthwhile things in the world in which she lived. She could have made her contribution to human welfare without the help of a husband. But having a husband and two children her scope of life became enlarged. That husband and those children owe her a debt of service they will never be able to pay. Ella E. Newell, who I am very glad is still with me, though very different, has been well qualified and endowed in spirit and ability for making success in the best things. She began early in deep interest and study in that difficult but beautiful science of the kindergarten. Later, she has been able to give herself in a most helpful way to other enterprises for the good of society. She has been an invaluable help in promoting the welfare of young womanhood, and she has started not a few boys on a way to a better life. As a director of the Los Angeles YWCA she has well filled and is now filling a very important place. She is closely connected with the business girls’ home built by her brother in memory of their mother, where some two hundred girls are cared for to their great delight and benefit. She has also proved herself endowed with a business capacity such as we used to think belonged only to men. She has proved that if she had devoted her life to business she could easily have achieved success. My descendants at the present are in two groups, the elder group is a son and daughter, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, a little prince. The other group is composed of one son. These descendants are busy making their own life story. They are capable of making it and I leave them to write it.
