Nick came first to California, to find a job, and send for his family that he left in Hickory, in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Nick found work at Buckeye Flour Mill ,  established in Marysville  in 1853. According to "The Solano Historian" May 1987 issue, Buckeye Mill was established in Marysville CA by  Eli Teegarden in 1853. The mill was listed under A.D. Starr & Co. (owner spouse of Mary Anna Teegarden) in 1861in the Marysville Directory. He sold the mill to J.H.Bowman [possible brother in law] and Justice Greely. The mill was taken over by the Sperry Flour Co. in 1901. From A.Duncan

Marysville Daily Appeal, Friday October 30, 1896 front page:   Nick Power Dead

Nicholas Power, who died in San Francisco on Wednesday, was for several years, employed as a flour packer at the Buckeye mills. The wife of the deceased died in this city about three years ago, and his oldest daughter, Mrs Mary Ann Farrenkam, was burned to death in San Francisco over a year ago. He was a native of County Waterford, Ireland. Six children, four sons and two daughters, are left to mourn his loss. He will be buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Oakland, this morning. At one time he was a member of the local lodge of the Knights of Honor.

Nicholas Power is buried at St Mary's Cemetery in Oakland, with 3 other Powers relatives from Ireland:

Brother Peter POWER, who died of consumption on August 21, 1896 at the age of 38.

Cousin Patrick POWER,   January 1937 San Francisco newspaper:

Funeral today (Wednesday)  from the chapel of JC O'Connor Co, 455 Valencia Street, thence to Mission Dolores Church, where the requiem mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at 9:45 am. Interment, St Mary's Cemetery, Oakland.

Patrick Power, born in Waterford in 1849, lived at 870 Fell Street, San Francisco, at the time of his death at the age of 88. According to the informant, Alice Power Parker of Anselmo, the daughter of Nicholas Power, Patrick had been in the US for 55 years---since 1882. He was a miner for 20 years and retired in 1906. Patrick lived in California for 3 years, and in San Francisco for 2 1/5 years before his death.

HARDY, Alice POWER   1853--May 26,1938  From the registers of St Mary's Cemetery, Oakland, "Mrs A. Hardy has a letter from Reverend Father McNally, Secretary of Cemetery dated December 7, 1910, in which he states, that herself and relatives are entitled to interment in this lot." Issued. Crossed out is: "Dup deed of December 7, 1910 to Mrs A. Hardy." Mrs Alice Hardy died at age 85 on May 26, 1938, in Napa State Hospital, town of Imola, Napa County, California. Alice's father was James Power, and her mother was Mary Hogan. According to the death certificate, Alice Power came to California in 1886, at the age of 33. She is found in censuses working as a domestic in San Francisco. According to the 1910 SF census, she married William G Hardy, an old soldier, in 1908, probably in San Francisco. There were no children. She is buried in Oakland with Peter Power, his brother Nicholas Power, and Alice's brother, Patrick Power. Peter Power was identified as brother to Nicholas by a SF newspaper article. Gravestone identifies Peter as a native of County Kilkenny. Interment registers indicate Peter's will and estate was executed January 20, 1897 in SF where Peter died by Pr O'Roony (Rooney). SF records were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire.

According to Marysville researcher Francie Lane, the Power children attended St. Joseph's parochial school in Marysville --Notre Dame School, which is still in operation and dates back to the gold rush in 1856. The school is located across the street from St. Joseph's Cathedral-- on C Street, between 7th & 8th St.  St Joseph's was the first and largest Cathedral built in northern California, as Marysville was once the third largest Californian city after the Gold Rush..

Statement That the Young Woman is Dead--THE ASPHYXIATION ROUTE

Not a Very Definite Establishment of Her Identity---The Letters of Inquiry

A few days ago an account of a newly married couple being asphyxiated appeared in the San Francisco dailies, and accompanying it were the following death notices:

In this city, December 30, 1894, Mary, beloved wife of the late John Smith, and daughter of Nicholas Powers, and sister of Alice  and Jennie Powers, a native of Pennsylvania, aged 22 years.

In this city, December 30, 1894, John, beloved husband of the late Mary Smith, a native of Ireland, aged 28 years.

A lady who resides in San Francisco wrote to her father, a well-known resident of this city, informing him that the woman who was the victim of the deadly gas burner was the daughter of Nicholas Powers who worked at the Buckeye Mills for a number of years, and had been married to Henry Farenkam, for a number of years employed in the Kimball stable.

An APPEAL reporter tried to locate Farenkam yesterday but was informed that he has not resided in this city for some time, but had been in town the early part of the week. Those who are intimately acquainted with Farenkam stated that he had never been divorced from Mary Ann, and that there must be some mistake, as she was a native of Marysville, not of Pennsylvania, as stated in the death notice. Her father's name is correctly stated as are also the names of her two sisters, and her age is about correct.

The following particulars appeared in last Monday's December 31, 1894 San Francisco Call page 10, column 5: from Ralph Clouse:

"Sunday is known as "asphyxiation day" at the Morgue, for a Sabbath seldom comes without a case of suffocation by coal gas. Many of such cases come from lodging houses, where no attention is paid to gas burners. The fuddled or ignorant transient retires late Saturday night, turns out the light and goes to bed ignorant of the fact that he has turned the stopcock too far, and the deadly fluid is filling the room. Next day his body is discovered and the Coroner's deputy reports that he found gas flowing from a burner in the apartment.

"A newly married couple, John Smith and wife of Berkeley, were among the burner's victims yesterday. they came to this city Saturday afternoon and spent the evening at Michael Mitchell's saloon, 823 Howard Street. Smith was a railroad employee and was related to the saloonkeeper. He was married a week ago to the buxom girl, and took her to the city with him for the purpose of introducing her to his friends. Late at night the Smiths made their way to the ferry only to discover that the last boat had crossed the bay. They returned to Mitchell's  and were invited to pass the remainder of the night in a furnished apartment adjoining the saloon. The invitation was gratefully accepted, and Mitchell went home leaving the gas burning in the room in which the young couple had retired. When the saloonkeeper entered his place yesterday morning the light in the room occupied by the guests was out, and the apartment filled with gas and the bride and groom lay dead together. The stopcock on the burner had been turned on a little too far.

"A physician was summoned by Mitchell, and he declared that the Smiths had been dead two hours."

About a month ago the unfortunate young woman wrote to a friend in this city to ascertain if Henry had any money and if he still owned an interest in the stallion, but she never said a word about being divorced or having been married again. Henry and his wife did not lead a very happy life as he got into trouble with her several times when she resided in the Fourth Ward.

Until Farenkam comes to town again it will be impossible to ascertain if he knows anything about the divorce proceedings having been instituted, or if he was aware that his wife was married again.

A well known resident of this city informed an APPEAL reporter last night that Mary Ann Powers was born in Pennsylvania and that she came to this city with her mother after her father, Nicholas Powers, had obtained employment. Her sisters, he stated, were all born in this city. He knew nothing, however, about her being divorced from Farenkam.

Notes for TIMOTHY ALOYICIOUS POWERS:

In 1900 there were no great opportunities for the orphans. The other orphan place {for girls} was in San Francisco at St Joseph's. St Vincent's was named St Vincent's Orphan Asylum of San Francisco, and at that time, the boys did not attend classes. They were taught to read and write only. At the age of 14, the boys were sent elsewhere, usually to work on a farm or to an apprenticeship of some sort.

Timothy wrote a letter January 3, 1906 from Portland Oregon to the St Vincent's Orphan Asylum in San Rafael, California:

Dear Friend,

I thought I would write you a few lines to let you know how I am getting along. I am staying with my sister up here and I do not like it as it is very cold and I think I will go up and see you. I suppose the boys enjoined your dinner that you gave them Christmas Day. I do not like it here as I did down there. I have worked in the woolen mills and paper mills and flour mills.

I've been getting pretty ritch. And how  is Mrs Miller and and Mr Kirk and Miss Furlong and the boy getting along? Tell them that I think of them in the same old way. January 15 will be my birthday and I will be 18 years old and I am going to be quite a young man. The weather up here is very bad. It is raining all the time. I reatched up here alright but was very sick all the ways up. Well, as it is getting late, I must close. Hoping to here from some one of you pretty soon. Wishing you all of you a merry christmas and a Happy New Year. Please tell Miss Furlong that I would like to hear from her.

My address is 146 1/2 First St, Portland, Oregon. I remain your first friend.        Timothy Powers

Notes for LOUISE POWERS:

While living on her parents' farm, Louise had to walk 3 miles to school. Horse & buggy to go shopping to Springwater Store.

She remembers living near Division Street in San Francisco when she lived with Aunt Alice Parker.  She said Aliceís husband was really nice.  From what Alice said it seemed to me like they might be wealthy, but she couldnít remember what he did for a profession.  She didnít get to know Aunt Kate at all because the sisters didnít get along with each other.  Alice Parker was very intelligent and set in her ways.  She was a fortune teller.   Alice would take her downtown to really nice restaurants for dinner.  George wouldnít come because he didnít like to eat out.  She spent time in China town.  She was only in San Francisco about 6 months so really didnít do very much other than go to school.

Louise and Ted did go to Medford Oregon to visit her uncle Pete.  He was married at that time, but she doesnít remember the wifeís  name.
