JOHN HOOPER TENNENT (Family Files) Submitted by Peter Morris. This is an incredibly detailed list of the ancestors of JOHN HOOPER TENNENT. Peter informed me in an email last year, that "John H. Tennent and Maria L. Tennent were the parents of Sarah 'Sallie' Tennent who married William P. Harrington, Jr. They in turn were the parents of Louise Tennent Harrington who married William Daniel Leahy. Leahy was a naval officer who rose to the rank of Fleet Admiral and was Chief of Naval Operations, and during WWII, Chief of Staff to Presidents Roosevelt and Truman." I asked Peter to send me a biography on this family, and he has sent the following impressive work. Thank you again Peter! Your records indicate a vast amount of detail, hard work, and monumental time that went into amassing this! [numbers after words refer to sources found neer the bottom of this page along with an index of names] Descendants of John Hooper Tennent First Generation 1. John Hooper Tennent1 was born between 1 Nov 1813 and 12 Jun 1814 in Delaware.2,3 He appeared in the census on 5 Aug 1850 in Lancaster Corporation, Fairfield County, Ohio and his occupation was listed as a miller and distiller.2 He appeared in the census on 11 Jun 1860 in Marysville, Yuba County, California, where his occupation was listed as a merchant.4 He was a merchant in Meadowlake, Nevada County, California in 1867 .1 He died on 1 Nov 1871 in Marysville,5 and was buried in the Marysville City Cemetery.6 John Hooper Tennent and Maria Virginia Reber were married about 1840. Maria V. REBER was born between 4 Jan 1822 and 3 Jan 1823 in Lancaster Corporation, Ohio based upon the census and other records. Her parents were John Peter Reber and Sarah Arnold Reber.7 She appeared in the census on 5 Aug 1850 in Lancaster Corporation, Ohio,2 and again in the census on 11 Jun 1860 in Marysville.4 She died on 4 Dec 1902 in Marysville7 and was buried in the Marysville City Cemetery.7 John and Maria had the following children: Sarah Hooper "Sallie" Tennent (born in Jul 1841) and Mary W. Tennent (born about Aug 1843). Second Generation 2. Sarah Hooper "Sallie" Tennent8 was born in Jul 1841 in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio.2,9 Family tradition suggests Sallie was born about 1841 in Marysville, California, which would have made her family pre-gold rush pioneers. However, the family name does not appear in Marysville, nor does the family appear in any of the lists of California pioneers. In fact, she appeared in the census on 5 Aug 1850 in Lancaster Corporation, Ohio.2 Her first appearance in California is in the federal census on 11 Jun 1860 in Marysville.4 She is mentioned in the journals of Charles E. De Long10,11 “Thursday, July 12, 1860 - ... took a Span of Grays and Jesse O Goodwin and drove to Oroville in three hours. Argued the case Bowen vs Aubrey et al against Filkins and Mesick and got a little the worst of the rulings. - came home and drove back in three hours. had a dance in the evening at Mrs. Taylor's. Miss Sally & May Tennent [and] Miss[es] Hubbard, McLelland, Booth, Buckmaster, Teegarden and Mrs. Taylor formed the lady coterie. Messrs. Hubbard, Hite, Booth, Oneale, Fall, and Belcher formed the gentlemen's coterie....” Sallie Tennent Harrington appeared in the census on 7 Jun 1900 in Colusa Township, Colusa County, California.9 Sarah Tennent and William Pierce Harrington Jr. were married on 1 May 1862 in Marysville.12 They appeared in the census on 23 Jun 1870 in San Francisco, California.13 While in this census listing William P. Harrington’s wife’s name is listed as Mary and the birthplace is incorrect for Sallie Tennent, the age is correct. None-the-less, I believe this is the correct person. William Pierce Harrington Jr.8,14,15 (son of William Pierce Harrington and Abigail V. Merrill) was born on 17 Apr 1826 in Damariscotta, Lincoln County, Maine. He was a clerk in Damariscotta when he appeared in the census on 23 Jul 1850.16,17 He next appears in the census on 26 Sep 1860 in Carson City, Carson County, Utah Territory as Nevada was then officially known.18 He was (or may have been) a Pvt in Company D, 6th California Regiment on 21 Oct 1862 in San Francisco.19 William P. Harrington Jr. appeared in the census on 20 Jun 1870 in Colusa Township, Colusa County, California.20 Note that this means he appeared twice in the 1870 census: first in San Francisco, then three days later in Colusa. However, it appears that W.P. Harrington was buying land in Colusa County that summer but had not yet taken up residence. It’s my guess that the family he was boarding with in Colusa may have listed him as an occupant or the hotelier in San Francisco may have provided the census information (which would possibly explain the errors regarding his wife. W.P. was elected as one of five Directors of the Colusa Railway Company for it's first year on 14 Jul 1885 in Colusa Township.21 He was made an officer of the merged Colusa Railroad Company and the Colusa and Lake Railroad on 29 Nov 1886 in Colusa.22 He is listed as staying at the Palace Hotel in 1889 and 1890 in San Francisco.23 He appeared in the census on 7 Jun 1900 in Colusa Township, and listed his occupation as banker.9 He died on 30 Nov 1903 in San Francisco. “A California pioneer of 1849, the late W.P. Harrington was the leading citizen of Colusa during the thirty-three years of his residence there. He was the pioneer banker, merchant, and railroad builder, and was universally loved for his public spirit and generosity of heart. He was born in Damariscotta, Maine, on April 17, 1826, and received his education in Lincoln Academy at New Castle, after which he hired out as a clerk in a store in Rockland. On March 4, 1849, when nearly twenty-three, Mr. Harrington started for California by way of Panama, with a party of thirteen others. On reaching the Isthmus, they found that there were fully four thousand persons waiting to get transportation page 1 to San Francisco. His party separated, but he organized another which was successful in getting through; and he arrived in San Francisco on August 1st of that year (1849). He at once set out for the mines at Big Bar, on the Consumnes River, and spent three months at placer mining. He was soon convinced that his forte lay in some other direction; so he went to Placerville, where he was given management of a general merchandise store for a time. In the fall of 1850 he opened a store for himself; but the excessive drought that year caused a scarcity of water, and mining could not be carried on except at heavy expense. So he quit business and went to Marysville; and there he engaged in the mercantile business under the name of Crockett and Co., the firm later becoming Harrington and Hazelton. In 1859 a larger field opened up in the mining regions of Nevada; and with J.C. Fall, J.A. Paxton, Judge Mott and James Wilson, he chartered a stage and visited Carson City, Virginia City, Gold Hill and other mining camps. All were impressed with the magnitude of mineral resources of these places; and a partnership was formed by Mr. Harrington, under the name of J. C. Fall & Co., and a general merchandise business was carried on at Carson City, with considerable success. The firm later became Kincaid & Harrington, and then Kincaid, Harrington & Co. During this time Mr. Harrington was a member of the first legislature of Nevada Territory, which met in 1861. After he retired from business in Nevada, Mr. Harrington came to San Francisco and became a stock broker. His attention was soon called to Colusa County, where the public lands were being taken up by capitalists; and in 1869, in behalf of Decker & Jewett, he came to Colusa to view, grade and purchase lands. He remained six weeks, and was so much impressed with the natural resources of the county that he disposed of his business in San Francisco and the next spring came to Colusa to make it his permanent home. He first engaged in the real estate business with W.F. Goad, and during that summer sold about one hundred thousand acres of land. On September 15, 1870, with others, he organized the Colusa County Bank. Without solicitation, he was tenured the position of cashier; and from that time until his death he was one of the bank's principal factors, having been a director, and its president at the time of his death. He also held the same position in the Bank of Willows and in the Colusa Agriculture Association. He was a member of the Pacific Union Club and of the Society of California Pioneers, being vice-president of the latter at the time of his death, on November 30, 1903. No more fitting tribute can be paid to his memory than the opinions of his associates and friends, who unite in saying that he was a conservative banker, one of the first men of Colusa County, and one of the up builders of the Sacramento Valley. On May 1, 1861, W.P. Harrington was united in marriage with Sallie H. Tennent, a daughter of John Tennent of Marysville, and a native of Lancaster, Ohio. They had five children, one of whom died in infancy. The others are: Tennent, born July 11, 1864; William Merrill, teller of the Colusa County Bank, born November 18, 1866; Mary Augusta, born April 7, 1869, the wife of A.P. Niblack, captain in the United States Navy; and Louise T., born Feb 15, 1876, the wife of W.D. Leahy, Lieutenant-Commander in the United States Navy.” Sarah Hooper "Sallie" Tennent and William Pierce Harrington Jr. had the following children: Tennent Harrington (born on 11 Jul 1864), William Merrill Harrington (born on 18 Nov 1866), Mary Augusta Harrington (born on 2 Apr 1869) and Louise Tennent Harrington (born on 15 Feb 1876). 3. Mary W. Tennent (the second daughter of John and Maria Tennent) was born about Aug 1843 in Ohio.2 She also appeared in the census on 5 Aug 1850 in Lancaster Corporation, Ohio2 and in the census on 11 Jun 1860 in Marysville.4 As mentioned above, she is mentioned in the journals of Charles E. De Long10,11 Mary W. Tennent and Horace Beach were married on 19 Apr 1864 in Marysville.25 Third Generation 4. Tennent Harrington8 was born on 11 Jul 1864 in Marysville, California. He appeared in the census on 23 Jun 1870 in San Francisco.26 He was listed as a Republican in the Great Register of 1910/11.27 He died on 2 Oct 1938 in Mare Island, Solano County, California. Tennent Harrington and Minnie Downing were married on 11 Jul 1893 in Colusa Township.28 They appeared in the census on 12 Jan 1920 in Colusa Township.29 Minnie Downing (daughter of Captain Downing) was born in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. Tennent Harrington and Minnie Downing had the following child: Mary Louise Harrington (born after 1893). 5. William Merrill Harrington8 was born on 18 Nov 1866 in Marysville. He also appeared in the census on 23 Jun 1870 in page 2 San Francisco.30 He was also listed as staying at the Palace Hotel in 1889 in San Francisco,31 and he also was listed as a Republican in the Great Register of 1910/11.32 He died on 22 Feb 1925. William Harrington and Mabel B. [--?--] were married before 1899. They appeared in the census on 22 Jan 1920 in Colusa Township.33 William Merrill Harrington and Mabel B. [--?--] had the following children: Helen Harrington and Sally Harrington. 6. Mary Augusta Harrington8 was born on 2 Apr 1869 in Marysville. She appeared in the census on 23 Jun 1870 in San Francisco34 and she appeared in the census on 7 Jun 1900 in Colusa Township.9 She died on 26 Apr 1949 in Washington, D.C. Mary Augusta Harrington and Captain A.P. Niblack were married some time after June 1900. 7. Louise Tennent Harrington8 was born on 15 Feb 1876 in Marysville.9 She appeared in the census on 7 Jun 1900 in Colusa Township.9 She appeared in the census on 29 Jan 1920 and again on 3 Apr 1930 in Washington, D.C.35 36 She died on 21 Apr 1942 in Vichy, France. Louise Harrington and William Daniel Leahy were married on 3 Feb 1904 in San Francisco, California. Fleet Admiral William Daniel Leahy8,37 (son of Michael Arthur Leahy (I) and Rose Hamilton) was born on 6 May 1875 in Hampton, Franklin County, Iowa. His father, Michael Leahy, a lawyer, had been Captain of Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers during the Civil War. Young Leahy originally hoped to attend West Point, but there were no appointments available. When he completed high school in Ashland, Bayfield County, Wisconsin, in 1893, he was able to win an appointment to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He graduated in 1897, 15th in a class of 47.38 Midshipman Leahy was assigned to USS Oregon, then in the Pacific. He was in that battleship when she made her famous dash around the horn in the Spring of 1898 to participate in the battle of Santiago on July 3. Having completed the two years' sea duty -- then required by law -- he was commissioned Ensign on 01 July 1899. 38 At that time, he was on the Asiatic Station, where, during the Philippine Insurrection and the Boxer uprising in China, he served in USS Castine, USS Glacier and commanded the gunboat USS Mariveles. He appeared in the census on 1 Jun 1900 in Shanghai, China, aboard the USS Castine.39 He returned to the United States in 1902, and for the next five years did duty in USS Tacoma and USS Boston which was stationed in Panama during the early period of construction of the canal. He was promoted to Lieutenant (junior grade) on 1 Jul 190238 and to Lieutenant on 31 Dec 1903.38 His first shore cruise was at the Naval Academy. Beginning in 1907, he served as instructor in the Department of Physics and Chemistry for two years. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander on 15 Sep 190938 and went to sea as navigator of the armed cruiser USS California in the Pacific Fleet. He appeared in the census on 4 May 1910 in USS California, Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, Solano County, California.40 During the American Occupation of Nicaragua in 1912, he was Chief of Staff to the Commander Naval Forces there. Late in 1912, he came ashore in Washington as Assistant Director of Gunnery Exercises and Engineering Competitions. In 1913, he was assigned to the Bureau of Navigation as a detail officer where he served until 1915. At that time, he took command of the dispatch gunboat USS Dolphin, and established a very close friendship with the then-Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt, who cruised with him on the ship. He was promoted to Commander on 29 Aug 191638 and was in that assignment in early 1917 in West Indian waters and had additional duty as Senior Aide on the Staff of Commander Squadron Three of the Patrol Force Atlantic Fleet. He served for almost a year as the Executive Officer of USS Nevada and in April 1918 went to command USS Princess Matotika, formerly Princess Alice , transporting troops to France. After a short cruise in that command, he came ashore in 1918 and served for three years as director of Gunnery Exercises and Engineering Competition in the Navy Department, and as senior member of the Fire Control Board. He was promoted to Captain on 1 Jul 1918.38 He appeared in the census on 29 Jan 1920 in Washington, D.C.35 In 1921, he went to sea in command of USS St. Louis, flagship of the Naval Detachment in Turkish waters during the war between Turkey and Greece. At the end of that war, he was given command of Mine Squadron One, and in 1922 further additional duty as commander, Control Force. When he returned to the U.S. and from 1923 to 1926, he served as Director of Officer Personnel in the Bureau of Navigation, and then had one year in command of the battleship USS New Mexico. In 1927, he reached flag rank, being promoted to Rear Admiral on 14 Oct 1927,38 and became Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance. He appeared in the census on 3 Apr 1930 in Washington, D.C.36 After almost four years, he went to sea in 1931 as Commander Destroyers Scouting Force. page 3 In 1933, he came ashore in Washington as Chief of the Bureau of Navigation for two years, when he went to sea as a vice admiral, and Commander Battleships Battle Force. On that occasion, President Roosevelt said "Bill, if we have a war, you're going to be right back here helping me run it." Immediately following his retirement, Admiral Leahy was assigned the duties of Governor of Puerto Rico in September 1939. He served in that capacity until November 1940 when he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Vichy, France where he served from January 1941 until recalled in May 1942. Louise became quite ill and died while they were in France. In July of that year, he was called back to active duty as Chief of Staff to the Commander in Chief, U.S. Army and Navy, the President of the United States. As such, he presided over the Joint Chiefs of Staff and, when our country was host, over the combined Chiefs.
