California Family Files Mabel Alice Goodrich Williams Submitted by Ronald D. Williams June 2011 [rwilliams1320@yahoo.com] Mabel Williams was my grandmother and is buried in the Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. Here is some information on her. Born Mabel Alice Goodrich March 12, 1874 in Minnesota. Mabel received her education at the University of Mankato, Minnesota. While teaching school in Judson County, Minnesota she boarded at a farm next to the W. E. Williams farm and that is where she met Edward Charles Williams. They were married in Mankato on June 9, 1897. They came to California in 1900 to settle first in Pasadena then moved to Lakeport in June 1906. On the way they laid over in San Francisco a number of hours to view the rubble of brick and the horrible results from the April 19, 1906 earthquake and fire. In the fall of 1906 they bought a ranch near Kelseyville then sold it in 1910 when the family moved back to Pasadena. Edward Charles worked for a furniture store in Pasadena delivering furniture with horse and wagon. In 1911 the man that bought the ranch in Kelseyville defaulted so Edward Charles went there to evict him and remained there while the family remained in Pasadena until school ended. In June 1911 Mabel with their three sons joined Edward at the ranch in Kelseyville. In 1912 Mabel and the boys moved into Lakeport so Ellsworth, the oldest son born in 1898, could attend school. In the summer they moved back to Kelseyville, a distance of 10 miles, but not to the ranch as now Edward had sold the ranch and was the manager of a grocery store. In making the sale he had taken in trade a small house and lot in Colma, San Mateo Co. Also enough cash to buy a new Model T for $900. In 1913 Edward Charles and Ellsworth learned to drive. (I have pictures of them and the car.) Edward C. operated a jitney bus service with the Ford later took a job as foreman in a Ford garage. In 1916 Mabel had been staying with the Sam Evans family in Kerman, CA. Mabel suffered from tuberculosis for several years and was staying with the Evans family after the birth of her fifth child in Colma hoping the dry climate would help her. Mabel died April 7, 1916. Edward Charles and Mabel had five children. William Ellsworth, born November 7, 1898 in Minnesota. Oliver Paul, born February 26, 1903 in Pasadena, Ca. Richard Clark (my father), born September 16, 1910. Edward Llewelyn, born May 4, 1913. Elizabeth Joy, born January 11, 1916. Edward Charles died September 8, 1932 in Sutter, Calif. and is buried there.
