THE $10,000 FOLLY Under the same law that authorized the county to construct the road from Quincy to Indian valley, the county was permitted to issue $7,000 in bonds to repair the ro= ad from Quincy to Beckwourth valley. Ned Smith, then a member of the board of supervisors, was appointed to receive the bonds and carry out the provisions of the statue. In addition to the bonds, an appropriation of $3,000 was made to complete the work. Mr. Smith received $929, at ten dollars per day, for his services in overseeing the contractors, which was thought by many to be a charge for overseeing himself.
