All persons donating to this site retain the rights to their own work. These Affidavits were stored in a box in the Local History Room at the Beal Memorial Library in Bakersfield, CA. They were loosely filed alphabetically and some had consent notes written by parents, guardians, etc. attached to them. A few consent notes were written on the back of old envelopes and one on a piece of brown paper bag. The following records concern the family of Jesus Miranda and his Native American wife Petra, who lived in the Kern River Valley. My notes are in brackets. In the matter of the application of Francisco Mendoza For a License to Marry Virginia Miranda State of California] ss County of Kern Francisco Mendoza and Jesus Miranda being first duly sworn and each for himself doth depose and say that he knows the above named Virginia Miranda, that she is of the age of eighteen years and a resident of Weldon, County of Kern, State of California; and the said Francisco Mendoza being further sworn deposes says that his name is Francisco Mendoza, that he is of the age of thirty years, and is a resident of Weldon, County of Kern, State of California and I know of no legal objection to our marriage.
