Anderson DOWNEY-Graveside services will be held today (Friday, Sept. 14) at 11 a.m. at the All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach for Robert E. Anderson, who died Sept. 4, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born March 27, 1924 in Verndale, Minnesota. After graduating from Verndale High School in 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 517th Airborne. His first combat jump was in the south of France in 1944. He was then transported north to fight in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded in both legs. He was transferred to a hospital in London. His wartime career ended in Berlin where he was stationed as part of the occupation. He returned to Minnesota and attended Saint Cloud State Teachers College to pursue a degree in physical education. It was there he met his future wife, Valjean Tomaseski of Saint Cloud. They graduated in the spring of 1950. Bob was recalled to active duty in the Army during the Korean War, but instead of being shipped overseas, he was sent to a Christian Brother Catholic High School to teach ROTC. After his teaching experience, he and Valjean were married in St. Cloud on June 14, 1952. He had worked in Los Angeles area during the early war years and liked the California lifestyle. He and Valjean moved here on their honeymoon. They lived first in Lynwood and Bob worked for Huntington Park First Savings and Loan in a banking career that spanned 22 years. He was also active in the community, belonging to the Rotary and serving as president of the Huntington Park club in 1965-66. In 1961 they moved to Downey, in a home that Valjean had designed herself which they had custom built. After leaving the savings and loan business, Bob continued in real estate investment and mortgage business until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife, Valjean, in December 1985. Survivors include his six children, Laura (Gregg) Freedman, Tom Anderson, Roberta (Richard) Good, Jean (Lon) Rosenberg, Jon (Kerry) Anderson and Mary Catherine Anderson; seven grandchildren, Hillary Freedman, Ian Anderson, Skyler Good, Justine and Jordan Rosenberg, and Ryan and Shannon Anderson. Arrangements are by the Zrelak Family Mortuary of Downey.
