Mountain Messenger February 16, 1895 Accidental Death The Justice of the Peace of Strawberry Valley Township has reported to the Coroner of Yuba county in regard to the accidental death of Frank Bean, of Scales, on February 2d: I hereby notify you of the death of Frank Bean , youngest son of Philander Bean, of Scales Diggings, who accidentally shot himself with a rifle while hunting at Slate Range on Feb. 2d. He was out with two other boys who heard he shot when he was killed. They went to a camp and as he did not arrive they became alarmed and went in the direction where they had heard the shot. They traced him by the blood stains where he had slid on the hard crust down the side of the hill until the body was stopped by a tree. An examination showed that the bullet had passed through the collar bone and he was dead when found. The deceased was a steady boy, loved by all who knew him and will be mourned by his bereaved parents and the community in which he resided.
