The Downey Eagle January 5, 2001 Volume 8 Number 46 Services set tomorrow for Carmen Joy Benson DOWNEY-A memorial service will be held tomorrow, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m., in the Prayer Chapel at Florence Avenue Foursquare Church in Santa Fe Springs for Carmen Joy Benson, a Downey resident since 1970, who died Sunday, Dec. 24, at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier, with her husband, Jack, by her side. Born in Le Lande, New Mexico on March 5, 1921, Carmen grew up in South Gate and graduated valedictorian from South Gate High in 1937. She attended L.A. City College, majoring in journalism and drama, then married Everett A. "Jack" Benson on March 12, 1939. They made their home in South Gate from 1947 to 1970. She and her husband operated Thriftway Market in South Gate from 1956 to 1961, and Benson's Market in Downey from 1961 to 1978. She was bookkeeper and controller for the businesses. She also worked as church secretary at Christian Chapel in South Gate for many years, where she served as the editor of Chapel Bells, the Church sermonette. An avid student of the Bible, she authored four books, "The Grace and Glory of God," "Supernatural Dreams and Visions of the Bible," "What About Us Who Are Not Healed?" and "Seven Splendid Moments." Carmen and Jack have been members of the Florence Avenue Foursquare Church since 1988. She enjoyed her family, opera, classical music, the ballet, and solving crossword puzzles from the Downey Eagle. She is survived by her husband, daughter Bonnie (husband Vince Concialdi) of Mission Viejo; granddaughter Carrie (husband Scott Schultz) of Yorba Linda; two grandsons, Steve Concialdi and his wife Sally, of Trabuco Canyon and Matthew Concialdi, Mission Viejo; three great-grandchildren, Gabriella Schultz, Ashley and Andy Concialdi; her brother, Tom Chapman, and his family, of Murrieta and Yorba Linda; and sister-in-law, Margerite Chapman, of Saratoga.
