"Big Bear Grizzly"; Wednesday, September 9, 2009 April 9, 1933-Aug. 21, 2009 Phyllis passed away in Apple Valley with her family at her side. She was in hospice care. Born in Long Beach, Phyllis lived most of her life in the same community. She worked in route sales for many years. She was active in support of her son�s activities while he was growing up, helping with Boy Scouts and other groups. Phyllis and her son moved to Big Bear City in October 1978. She started babysitting and opened a craft store in the garage of her home. Phyllis cared for two generations of Big Bear Valley youngsters, including her own grand-children and great-grandchildren. Every Thanksgiving weekend for 21 years, Phyllis opened her home for her annual holiday bazaar. Floor to ceiling was filled with handmade crafts she and other friends created for the annual event. Customers came from throughout the Southland to find unique holiday items. Phyllis always provided home-made cookies, cider, coffee and other treats to guests visiting at the holiday bazaar. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Ethan Bowers, who died in February 2008. She is survived by her son, Rick (Judi) of Big Bear City; her sister Audrey Carey of Banning; her grand-daughters Michelle (Danny) Stevenson of Raymond, Calif., Sarah (Chris) Cuzzucoli of Scotch Plains, N.J., Kelsey Bowers of Oceanside, Calif., and her great-grandchildren Chase Piercy, Delaeny and Daniel Stevenson of Raymond, Ryan Stevenson of Yucaipa, Calif., and Aedan Cuzzucoli of Scotch Plains, N.J., and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Discovery Center Amphitheater on North Shore Drive in Fawnskin. The service is set for 1 p.m. and will be followed by a reception at Rick and Judi Bowers� home in Erwin Lake. The family asks that donations be made in Phyllis Bowers� name to the Soroptimist International of Big Bear Valley mammogram program. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 6505, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315.
