Daily Press, Hesperia Star & Desert Dispatch; 7/21/2009 Marlene Ladell Shields Bradley was taken to be with our Lord in the early hours of July 14, 2009, after a long struggle with various health problems. She recently relocated from Apple Valley to Poway to be closer to her daughter Leah Cullen of Ramona. She was 73 years old at the time of her passing. Marlene was born to this world ahead of schedule on Jan. 31, 1936 in Hobbs, N.M., as her mother and father (Edna Cleota and Walter Harold Shields) were on their way to live in California. She lived in many places during her 73 years, but managed to settle down for the last 20 years of her life in Apple Valley. Marlene loved to dance, sing, quilt, tat and in general be artistically creative. Marlene is survived by her only child Leah Cullen (husband Jeff Cullen) of Ramona, Calif.; her grandsons Sean and Wesley Cullen, also of Ramona; her sister Edna Gillis of Sun City, Ariz.; her nieces Susan Hall of Phoenix, Ariz. (and her daughter Shilo), and Alice Barta of Broken Arrow, Okla. (and her son Jeff and daughter Kristi); her aunt Lucy Ellen Willhelm (and her daughter Helen Fisher) of El Cajon; and her numerous cousins living in the Midwest. Marlene was preceded in death by her mother and father, and nephew Joseph Varnell. There will be two memorial services held in Marlene's honor. The first will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25 at Ramona Lutheran Church, 520 16th St. in Ramona. The second will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1 at Apple Valley Church of the Nazarene, 12935 Central Road in Apple Valley. In lieu of flowers or gifts her family asks that a donation be made in Marlene's honor to either church listed above. If you need further information, please contact Leah at (760) 789-9774. Marlene will be missed tremendously by her family and the many friends who were blessed to have her in their lives, but we know that she is up in heaven square-dancing with Jesus and we'll see her again soon!
