Brown, a native of Maine, aged 41 years. Mountain Messenger � September 5, 1908, Pg. 3 DROWNED AT BRANDY CITY HEAD DAM � La Monte Brown Loses His Life While Swimming � La Monte E. Brown, a resident of Scales and vicinity for many years was drowned in Little Canyon Creek at the head dam of the Brandy City Mining Company�s property last Tuesday. Against the advice of friends he went in swimming and was taken with cramps in the cold water. O. C. Ermatinger, seeing his predicament, plunged in after him, but the drowning man caught Ermatinger by the leg and pulled him under. Ermatinger was finally pulled out by C. A. Edgar. When Brown was pulled out of the water everything was done to resuscitate him but without avail and Coroner McDonald was sent for. Mr. McDonald went to the head dam, summoned a jury and held an inquisition on the body, which jury, after hearing the evidence adduced, brought in the following verdict: State of California, County of Sierra. In the matter of the Inquisition upon the body of La Monte E. Brown, Deceased. We, the undersigned, the jurors summoned to appear before A. McDonald, the Coroner of the County of Sierra, at Scales, on the 2d day of September, A. D. 1908, to inquire into the cause of the death of La Monte E. Brown, having been duly sworn according to law, and having made such inquisiton, after inspecting the body and hearing the testimony adduced, upon our oaths, each and all do say that we find the deceased was named La Monte E. Brown, was a native of Maine, aged about 41 years, that he came to his death on the 1st day of September, A. D. 1908, in this county, by drowning caused by taking cramps owing to the coldness of the water. He was drowned in Little Canyon Creek at Brandy City Mining Company�s Head Dam. All of which we duly certify by the Inquisition, in writing, by undersigned this 2d day of September, A. D. 1908. Isaac Copeland John A. Bean John Hutchinson Chas. E. Curtis A. S. Packard W. R. Cramp. Mr. Brown had been in the employ of the Brandy City Mining Company ever since the present work was started, part of the time as foreman. He leaves a wife and several children, the youngest less than a month old besides scores of friends to mourn his tragic death. Mountain Messenger � September 5, 1908, Pg. 3 Rev. C. H. Easterbrook was called to Scales on Thiursday of this week to officiate at the funeral of the late La Monte Brown.
