The Downey Eagle March 9, 2001 Volume 9 Number 3 Herbert Caldwell Byrne remembered by many DOWNEY-Funeral services were held March 3 at the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary Chapel for Herbert Caldwell Byrne, a longtime resident of Downey and a pipe line specialist for Ameron for most of his adult life. He was 75, born Dec. 26, 1925 in La Jolla to parents Herbert and Madeline Caldwell Byrne, and died Feb. 25 at the Hospice House in Whittier. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as a fire control man 3rd class. He was a member of the Downey Moose Lodge and the American Legion. He loved football and the Rams when they were here, and loved gardening and working in his yard, where he maintained a rose garden and built a waterfall-fountain of which he was very proud. He often helped his neighbors. Survivors include his son, Richard Byrne of Lake Forest; a daughter, Madeline Le Collibus of Laguna Niguel; step-son Rick Bentley of Visalia; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Byrne in 1984. Rev. J. Robert Stimmel of the United Methodist Church officiated. Private interment followed cremation at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier. Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
