Mountain Messenger 3/31/1900, Pg. 3 Death of Mrs. Margaret Canney Mrs. Margaret Canney, wife of Cornelius Canney, died suddenly of heart failure at her home in Port Wine this County, Tuesday morning, March the 6th, 1900, aged 53 years. Mrs. Canney had not been in the best of health for the past few weeks, but was feeling better and was able to be around as usual. Tuesday morning she awakened between the hours of 2 and 3 oclock. She was not resting very well and got up, lit the candle and went to the kitchen; she returned and sat by the bed. Her husband got up to make the fire and had only left the room a minute or two; when he returned she was unconscious and about breathing her last. Miss Mary, their daughter, who was sleeping upstairs was called and came immediately. They tried to arouse her but soon found out their efforts were in vain. The summons had come. Mrs. Canney was a native of Ireland. She came to this country about thirty-five years ago and was soon after married to Cornelius Canney here at Port Wine and has since been a resident of this place. She was of a quiet, kind disposition, and one who has always lived in harmony with her neighbors; always ready to lend a helping hand. She left us without an enemy but with many friends to mourn her loss. She was a devoted wife and mother and will be greatly missed where she lived. The funeral took place from the home Friday, March 9th, at eleven oclock. The remains were interred in the Port Wine burying ground and the funeral was well attended considering the very bad traveling. The family have the sympathy of all their many friends in the sad blow that has fallen so suddenly upon them. But when the sun, in all his state, Illumed the Eastern skies, She passed through glorys morning- Gate, And awakened in Paradise. A Friend
