Source Unknown; 9 Aug 1951 FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE WINKLER MINE In the first fatal accident to happen at the Winkler Mine, 15 miles southeast of Mojave, owned by the Burton Bros. of Rosamond, in years Jay Cochrane of Palmdale was killed when he fell about ten feet jamming his head between the wall of the mine and an upright timber breaking his neck. He was found almost immediately by fellow workers who tried without success, to administer artificial respiration. According to the Kern County Coroner, the death was accidental. The dead man is survived by his wife, Mrs. Catherine Cochrane and a daughter Margaret, of Palmdale and two brothers, Jack and Jim Cochrane, both of Oregon.
