Source Unknown; Date Unknown Nancy Batson Crews, a former WWII pilot, mayor of California City, builder and beloved aunt of the city's current financial manager, Terry Hicks, died on January 14, 2000 at the age of 80. Mrs. Crews was a member of an elite group of 25 female pilots, the Women's Auxiliary Ferry Service, flying American fighters from factories to overseas shipment points. Mrs. Crews continued to fly after the war, and co-piloted a commercial jet until she was nearly 80. Mrs. Crews served as Mayor of California City in the late 1970s before returning to Alabama where she began a successful home-building firm. She was a graduate of the University of Alabama and later worked for Embry-Riddle University where she was a flight instructor. Mrs. Crews is survived by sons Paul and Radford Crews; daughter, Jane Tonarely; sister Amy Strange. Graveside services were held on January 18, 2001 in Alabama.
