Mojave Desert News; 26 Aug 1999 injuries resulted in the Monday accident Star MHS athlete killed in crash by Terri Doyle Senior Staff Writer MOJAVE � One Mojave High School student was killed and four other young people injured when the vehicle in which they were riding went out of control and overturned while traveling southbound on State Highway 14 near Mojave last Thursday at 7:10 a.m.Killed in the accident that was witnessed by more than 60 students was Koury Davis of California City. Davis and three of his classmates including his girlfriend, Lindsay Woolford age 17, were being driven to school in Mojave by Dannon West, a 1999 graduate of MHS. California Highway Patrol officer Don Todd said West was attempting to pass a school bus and entered the northbound lane of Highway 14 but apparently did not see an oncoming tractor trailer. Natasha Woolford, age 17, who was riding in the front seat of the 1988 Chevy Nova tried to grab the steering wheel in an attempt to maneuver the car out of the path of the truck. West tried to turn the wheel to the left and the vehicle went out of control ejecting three students including Davis from the back seat. Natasha Woolford and Curcinda Carson sustained minor injuries and were treated and released from Antelope Valley Hospital. Davis, a senior at MHS and star football player for the Mustangs died of his inju- ries on the way to the hospital, said Todd.Todd said the vehicle was traveling in excess of 70 mph and only the driver and front seat passengers were wearing seat belts. Students were met by crisis intervention staff when they arrived at school and were offered counseling before classes were suspended for the day. Koury Davis memorial set for today A memorial service for 17-year old Mojave High School student Koury Davis has been set for today at 11:30 a.m. The service will be held in the Mustang Gym and is open to the community. Davis, a star athlete at the high school and well-known in sports circles throughout the Antelope Valley was killed in a car accident on August 26 while on his way from California City to classes in Mojave. Davis will be buried in Fayette, Miss. Donations for the family are being accepted at Mojave High School 15732 O St., Mojave or at the California City and Mojave branches of the Mojave Desert Bank. Advise the teller you wish to make a contribution to the Koury Davis Family Trust. Koury Deon Davis, 17, passed away on August 26, 1999, after an auto accident on his way to school. Koury was an accomplished athlete in football, basketball, track and baseball at Mojave High School, Mojave, CA. Koury is survived by his parents, John and Lorna Davis and brother Kelvin Davis, all of California City, CA; and various relatives and friends. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 1999 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Stickel Mortuary, 2201 Inyo Street, Mojave, followed by a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. at the Mojave High School football field. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 2, 1999 at the Mojave High School Gymnasium. Conducting services will be Pastor Demetric Mosley of Mojave. Burial will take place in Fayette, Mississippi on Sunday, September 5. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Koury Davis Scholarship Fund established at Edwards AFB Credit Union. Arrangements by Stickel Mortuary.
