Source Unknown; 12 Dec 1940 AUTO PLUNGES OVER CLIFF Failing to negotiate a curve en Highway 466, brought death Wednesday morning to Marvin Bee Elrod, 27, of Shafter, when the car in which he was riding plunged off the highway into a deep canyon 7 miles west of Tehachapi. His wife, Wanda May Elrod and baby daughter, riding with him, escaped serious injuries but were taken to the Tehachapi Valley Hospital for treatment. Mrs. EIrod sustained bruises and a broken collar bone. The baby received abrasions about the face. Mr. Elrod received a broken neck and lived for several hours after the accident. According to Mrs. Elrod's report when questioned by State Highway Patrolman Scott, who investigated the accident, her husband, who had been employed by the railroad at Muroc, had left Tuesday, driven to Shafter to pick up her and the baby and then return to Muroc. They had left Bakersfield at 11 p, m. and had traveled nearly two hours when the accident happened. She had fallen asleep and did not awaken until the car had turned over several times and was lying in the ravine. She was taken to the hospital early in the morning by J. H. Schlotthauer, father of Dr. Harold Schlotthauer of the hospital staff The body of the dead man was taken to the Mojave Funeral Parlor where it will be held for autopsy. Elrod is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wade Elrod, a brother Thomas, and three. sisters Hazel, Colleen and Ogell, all of Shafter.
