San Mateo Times, Friday, March 11, 1994 James M Fales Jr., city manager of Redwood City from 1972 to 1982, died early Thursday morning in Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City after a short illness. Born in San Francisco, he was a graduate of the University of San Francisco and earned his master's degree at the University of California, Berkeley. At USF, he was an outstanding football player and played briefly for the Green Bay Packer. His professional career began as assistant city manager in Berkeley from 1955 to 1969. He was city manager in Pleasanton from 1960 to 1972 before coming to Redwood City, where he lived for 22 years then served in the same post in Richmond from 1982 to 1988. He served as interim city manager in Fairfax, Hayward and, most recently, Woodside. He also had his own consulting firm. A past executive vice president of the International City Managers Association, Mr. Fales was a member of the League of California Cities, Associated Bay Area Governments (ABAG), Palo Alto Elks Lodge 1471 and the Sequoia Club in Redwood City. He is survived by a son, James and a daughter, Stacey Ricci, both of San Carlos. A memorial service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at Redwood Chapel, 847 Woodside Road, redwood City. Private inurnment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.
