The Downey Eagle Friday, December 17, 1999 Vol. 7 No. 43 Friends, family mourn Leila Mae Fox at 94 DOWNEY-Funeral services were held Dec. 7 at the Hillside Chapel of Rose Hills Memorial Park Cemetery for Leila Mae "Topsy" Fox, a longtime local resident, who died Dec. 1 in the Country Villa nursing home in Long Beach. She was 94, born in Nebraska in 1905 to parents William Peter and Grace Irwin. The family moved to Pasadena, where she attended junior high school, and graduated from high school in Covina. She married William Harold Fox at 18 in Pasadena, and worked their "Fairview" dairy. They moved to Ojai in 1938, then to San Bernardino in 1942. She worked for the Post Office for 15 years in Baldwin Park. On her retirement she and Harold traveled the U.S., always returning to take grandchildren on trips to Cachuma and Palm Springs. They put on horse shows for the children, served soft drinks during Pop Warner football games, and were active in the Eastern Star and Masons. She suffered her first stroke in 1971, recuperating at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital, then four years at Bird Haven in Norwalk and 18 years at Country Villa in Downey. Last Christmas her back caused her to move to the Country Villa in Long Beach. Survivors include her children, Marjean Sherfey of Downey; Bettie Randle of Arizona, Bill Fox of West Covina, Janet Allen of Tehachapi; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. The family suggests donations in her name to the City of Hope or the Eastern Star.
