This news electrified the people of Mojave on the morning of the Fourth and placed a distinct damper on any festivities which had been outlined for the day, for everyone expected Steve, as he was familiarly known to most people here, to recover from the stroke he suffered recently while at work In his office In the S. P. yards. Born In Mason, Ill., February 21, 1884, the son of Leander and Libby Hardin, he started his railroad work with the Illinois Central, coming to Mojave in 1910 where he has, remained up to the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Harriet, a son Stephen Jr., and two nephews, Dr. Frank Courtney of Los Angeles and Frank Hardin of St. Louis, Mo. He was for many years a member of the Masonic Lodge in Los Angeles which organization took part in the burial rites, as is their custom. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of .Railroad Trainmen and Railroad Yardmasters of America. Funeral services were conducted at the Community Congregational Church of Mojave on Tuesday, July 7, at 10 a. m. with the Rev. Judson Oldfield officiating. Mrs. Rachel Hodges rendered a solo and the organist was the Rev. Clarence Goad of the Assembly of God Church who played a bell solo. Pall bearers were the Messrs. A. Houck, W. F. Tommer, R. M. Adduddell, J, E. White, D. W. Hamilton and R. O. Carmichael. Interment was in lnglewood Memorial Park of Bakersfield.
