"Big Bear Grizzly"; Thursday, March 26, 2009 Born and raised to the age of 15 years in Covington, Ky., Tom and parents moved to Los Angeles. Upon graduation from high school he joined the Navy for a 2-year hitch. He enrolled in the first class at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, then finished his BS at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He later received his MS from USC. He worked for Ralston Purina and Collier Chemical until settling upon a career in education. He moved to Big Bear in 1960 from Brawley after teaching there for 3 years. Bringing with him Betty, his wife, and 4 children, Kathleen, Michael, Ann and Therese. Paul arrived after the move to Big Bear. He married Lois Johnson in 1969 and multiplied the family with Gannard, Zane, Rayna and Kit. All nine of the children graduated from Big Bear High School. While in Big Bear he was a volunteer fireman, a fire commissioner and also represented Fawnskin on BBARWA. After 25 years of teaching every grade from 5th to junior college, he retired and moved to Germany to teach American military dependent children for a year. He is survived by his wife, Lois, 9 children, 13 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and many wonderful friends. Private services will be held at Riverside National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to the American Cancer Society.
