Source Unknown; Date Unknown March 23, 1923 � Aug. 15, 2004 Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 20, at the Wood Family Funeral Service Chapel for William "Jim" Howitz, 81, of Tehachapi (formerly of Rocklake, N.D.) who passed away on Aug. 15 in a Bakersfield hospital. Jim was born March 25, 1923, in Langdon, N.D. to W.J. and Frances Howitz. He was reared and educated in Langdon. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He earned his bachelor of science degree from the University of North Dakota in 1951 and later obtained his masters of education degree from the University of North Dakota in 1958. On June 8, 1955, he married Irene Stavert in Rolla, N.D. He and his wife then taught in Rocklake, N.D. until 1957, when they moved to Tehachapi. He taught business education in the Tehachapi school system until he retired in 1983. Jim was a member of the Tehachapi Community Congregational Church and the California Retired Teacher's Association. He enjoyed walks with his wife, cars, collecting knives, taking pictures and reading. He is survived by his wife, Irene of Tehachapi; brother, Donald Howitz of Brainerd, Minn.; nieces, Barbara (Howitz) Fordyce of Minneapolis, Minn., Joanne (Howitz) Brede of Denver, Colo., and Jean (McFadgen) Magee of Valley City, N.D.; and nephews, Michael Howitz of St. Paul, Minn., Mark Howitz of Minneapolis, Minn., Kenneth Peterson of Idaho Falls, Idaho, John Peterson of Rolla, N.D., and Jim McFadgen of Valley City, N.D. He was preceded in death by his parents, W.J. and Frances Howitz and brother, Thomas Howitz. Reverend Diane Ryder officiated at the service.
