Source Unknown; Date Unknown Long time California City resident, George Hutchinson, born July 15, 1928 in Bangor, Maine, passed away in his California City home December 20, 1998. At the young age of not quite 17, and as World War II was nearing the end in Europe, George enlisted in the United States Marines. While training in California to fight in the Pacific Theatre, George's platoon was awarded top honors for their skills. Because of this award, after the war was over, his platoon was selected to be in two of John Wayne's movies: "The Sands of Iwo Jima", and "The Flying Leathernecks". After George's tour of duty with the Marines, and his moment of fame in Hollywood, he returned to Maine where he trained to be a painter. After developing his skills, he painted many homes and offices up and down the Eastern Seaboard. George married Doris Dobson in 1955 and in 1966 he moved his family to sunny California City where he continued his career, painting many of California City's original homes. George was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Hutchinson, after 33 years of marriage. He is survived by two daughters, Geraldine Walters of Ridgecrest and Carol Vela of California City; three sons, Terrance Hutchinson of California City, William Hutchinson of California City, and George Hutchinson, Jr. of Los Angeles; 11 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren (the 5th great-grandchild is due in February); and one sister, Roselie Briggs of Melbourne, Florida. There will be a grave side service for George, January 4 at 11 a.m. at the California City Cemetery.
