All persons donating to this site retain the rights to their own work. "Big Bear Grizzly" Thursday, November 17, 2005 Carl F. Johnson Jr. 85, passed Oct. 31, 2005, in La Jolla, Calif. Born April 12, 1920, in Buffalo, New York, Carl was a longtime resident of Big Bear Valley and the former owner of the H&R Block franchise here for 20 years before moving to Menifee in 1993 with his wife, Jane. A retired Lt. Col. USAF after 25 years of service in WWII, Korean and the Vietnam wars he was then a meteorologist for American Airlines. Carl was a member of the Big Bear and Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge and past president of the VFW in Big Bear. Carl is survived by his four daughters, Nancy Wing of Bethesda, MD, Bonnie Novak and Judy Fogg, both of San Diego, and Shannon McElwee of Hemet; son Carl F. Johnson, III of Westport, Wash.; sister Ruth Cardon of Laverne; 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Carl's wife, Jane, preceded him in death in Oct. 1999. Graveside services were held Nov. 4, 2005, at the Riverside National Cemetery with full military honors.
