Mountain Messenger 1/12/1902, Pg. 3 Died From Drinking Wood Alcohol At the Onion Valley Hotel, Plumas county, on March 30th, two deaths resulted from drinking wood alcohol --- one Mr. Samuel Johnson of Quincy, who was an employee in the Chicago mine, a few miles distant from the hotel, and the other Mrs. Wm. Reese, sister of the proprietors wife Two others, Mr. Tom Simmons and Paddy ODonnell are very sick from drinking the same mixture. It seems that the party met at the hotel sometime during the afternoon or evening, and one of the party produced a bottle filled with wood alcohol, the nature of the contents being unknown to them at the time, which Mrs. Hohn had purchased a few days before for varnishing purposes. Mr. Jones reached the mine early Monday evening, complaining of a pain in his chest. Everything was done to relieve the suffering man, but with out avail, and he passed away at 4 oclock a. m. Tuesday. Mrs. Reese lingered but a short time, dying Monday afternoon at 4 oclock, Simmons and ODonnell were not badly affected by the poison, and at this writing, hopes are entertained for their recovery.---Plumas Independent.
