Daily Appeal February 12, 1898, Pg. 3 SIERRA COUNTY ( excerpt ) The following items were taken from the Sierra County Enterprise of current issue. - - - - - Wm. Jones , an old-timer of Poker Flat, died at that place on the 3d instant and was buried on the 4th. He was a native of Wales and 75 years of age. He was naturalized in Nevada county in 1857. At one time Bill Jones as he was familiarly called, was a sailor on board a slave vessel which was being hotly pursued by a Government revenue cutter, witnessed the brutal and inhuman murder of nine hundred slaves in a few hours to destroy the evidence of the nefarious business in which it was engaged. The slaves were taken out of the hold, weighted and sunk in the ocean off the Florida coast. No pleadings for mercy touched the hearts of these slaves pirates--- men, women and children to the last one met their untimely death.
