Larue Jr. DOWNEY-A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 3:15 p.m. in the gymnasium at Warren High School, 8141 De Palma St., for Gerald A. Larue, Jr., Ph.D., an educator for more than 30 years, who died after a battle with bile duct cancer Jan. 2. He was most recently the director of support programs for the Downey Unified School District, with responsibilities including assessment and evaluation, gifted and talented education, liaisons for the instructional services division with the technology programs, grant writing, summer school programs, and several other areas (including the familiar "other duties as assigned"). For the past two years he had also taught in the master's degree program at Chapman University. He was 52, born April 24, 1948, and was involved as a teacher, site administrator, and district administrator. He held a B.A. in psychology and a secondary teaching credential from USC, an M.A. in educational psychology and an administrative credential from California State University at Los Angeles; a Ph.D. in learning and instruction from the University of California at Los Angeles, and a pupil personnel service credential from California Lutheran College. He began his career in the Los Angeles Unified School District as a math and science teacher at James A. Foshay Junior High School. From there, he progressed to the position of assistant principal at Lynwood High School, in the Lynwood Unified School District. He came to the Downey Unified School District in 1985 as an assistant principal at Warren High School and was promoted to Director of Support Programs in 1993. His skills included those of grant-writer, with which he won the City and school district hundreds of thousands of dollars in assistance. He was devoted to his career, his students and his family. He and his wife, Lelitia, had been married for 27 years. Their son, Gerald IV, is a student at the University of Hawaii. His hobbies and personal interests included marine biology, classical music, stamp and coin collecting, surfing, and computers and technology. He also held a black belt from the Hapkido Karate Federation. All his friends and colleagues are welcome at the Tuesday service, which will also be a celebration of his life.
