Felix Joseph Le Roy Published: Thursday, November 4, 2010 5:04 PM PDT Born in Roxbury, Conn. on Nov. 12, 1912, to Milford Joseph Le Roy and Emily Mary Gottwald, Felix Joseph Le Roy died peacefully on Oct. 24, 2010, just 10 days short of his 98th birthday. He was raised in Brattleboro, Vt., before joining the Navy in 1935 and serving on the USS Chicago in the Aviation Dept. He was stationed in Long Beach, Calif., where he met and married his wife, Maude Louise Smith, in 1937. They were married 72 years. After 4 years in the Navy, he and Louise moved to Pensacola, Fla., with their 2 young sons, Danny and Richard, working for McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft Co. Shortly, thereafter, he was transferred back to California where he worked at the Naval Air Station on Coronado Island in San Diego. Before the Le Roy family finally arrived in Big Bear, Felix had worked on a PEAR RANCH in Placerville. Calif., then moved to Monterey where he built his own boat with plans to become an abalone fisherman, and then to Pacific Grove where they owned a hotel. In 1948, they moved to Big Bear Lake, had their 3rd son, David, and opened a clothing store called Le Roy's Family Bootery. The store was in the center of the Village where residents were able to buy letterman's jackets, Levis ($1.49) and high school gym clothes. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Bear Backers (spending many years watching his sons and grandsons play football and basketball while they attended Big Bear schools) and was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary , helping to raise funds to build our much needed hospital. He is survived by his 3 sons: Dan Le Roy (Janie) of Salt Lake City, Richard Le Roy (Gloria) and David Le Roy (Monique), both of Big Bear Lake. Ten Grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren had the good fortune of spending much time with their Grandpa whom they will remember for his kind and gentle nature and his extraordinary sense of humor. A memorable and touching service was held on Nov. 1, 2010, after which he was laid to rest at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands, Ca.
