Thomas Lewis, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hussey, was born in Monmouth Shire, Wales, in the year 1830. Was married to Thomas Lewis at Newport, Wales in the year 1852. She became mother of four children, two sons and two daughters who are now living. She died October 23d, 1886, at her home, a residence occupied since 1876, located some three miles north-east of Scales, Sierra Co., California. Some years past she became affected with a severe cough, causing a gradual decline in health, which eventually induced symptoms of other diseases. During the weeks of her last illness, her husband, her relatives and friends were ceaseless in their care. Nothing that could be thought of service to relieve her sufferings was neglected. But her strength failed, and for some days she lingered in constant expectation of death, to which she had become reconciled, as it was now the only means of relief of he sufferings. The keen pain of separation was soothed by the serene and patient spirit with which she bore her illness, and by the perfect calmness and Christian joy with which she anticipated at the hour of her death. She became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of seventeen and remained faithful until death. To the last she was ever thoughtful for the comforts of the anxious watchers at her bed side. To the bereaved family the parting was in heart rendering grief and with a deep sense of the loss that can never be replaced. The funeral took place Oct. 24th, and was attended by a large number of people. The remains were placed in the cemetery at Port Wine. Relatives of the deceased desire to extend thanks for services and attentions.
