Mojave Desert News; 17 Feb 1949 Beloved Mojave Matron Funeral Held Saturday Organizations of Mojave ladies to which she belonged will feel the absence of Mrs. Gladys MacRae, 41, beloved wife of Frank MacRae and mother of Mrs. Jeanine Callahan of Lone Pine and Mrs. Ovunual Hanks of Hollywood, who passed away on Wednesday of last week, February 9, in Mojave. Summing up Gladys qualifications as a friend has been aptly given in the following words written by Mrs. Oliver Barden. "Sturdy" has been my word for Gladys, not referrmg to her physically but spiritually. A strong, brave, rugged, little soul, always capable of hoeing her own row, and ever ready to give a hand to others. If Gladys was your friend, you had a friend in any kind of weather. You never need wonder where you stood with her and if she was on your side she'd fight with you against the world. She had no 'Company Manners', she was just always Gladys to one and all. No kowtowing or bootlicking to those who seemed to have a little more than others and no pretense-she was always Gladys and you could take it or leave it. "But we do not bury our friends ~ and as long as we cherish her memory she will continue with us and will make life easier and pleasanter for us with her sweet spirit and sturdy character."
