"Big Bear Grizzly"; Thursday, April 17, 2008 (Patty Ann to her siblings and Patty to other family and friends), departed from this world, at the age of 57, on April 10, 2008, at Loma Linda University Hospital; following a sudden massive cerebral hemorrhage incurred on the afternoon of April 8 in Big Bear. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 18, at St. Josephs Catholic Church, 42242 North Shore Drive, Big Bear Lake. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, at St. Josephs. Following the Mass, everyone is invited to the Parish Hall for luncheon and a celebration of Pattys life in the manner she would most appreciate - an informal sharing by family and friends. Patty Ann was born on March 21, 1951, in the doctors office that passed as a hospital on Beaver Lane at Bartlett Road in Big Bear, just two blocks from her first home behind the arcade and shooting gallery, and from her second home on Stone (Juniper) Road. Her third home was in the new house, across from the Wigwam on Pine Knot at Maryland and Stocker, where she spent much of her childhood playing in, and around, the old cabins and structures that once comprised the original town of Pine Knot. She attended Big Bear Lake Elementary School, and graduated from Big Bear High School in 1969. She attended San Bernardino Valley College for a short time, and airline employee service training school in St. Louis, Mo. Patty married Matt Manahan, Jr. in Big Bear on Nov. 21, 1971. They had no children, but Patty was extremely proud of her six nieces and nephews, and eight grandnieces and nephews. Following a short tenure in the familys old cabin behind the arcade, Matt and Patty resided in Arleta, Calif., moving back home to the mountains in 1990, taking up permanent residence at Whispering Pines in Big Bear City. Patty Ann grew up in the family arcade, shooting gallery and snow rental business on Big Bear Boulevard next to Chads (now the Arnett Black Hills Gold store). She was a friendly face, making change, distributing skee ball tickets (win-tags), passing out prizes, cleaning the glass on the machines, and sweeping up the shells. One of the best parts of working in the business for Patty Ann, was having the whole front open to the sidewalk (the street-side walls lifted up into the false front in those days) and being able chat with all who passed by. She was a near-lifetime member of the St. Josephs Parish, having received all of her Sacraments (except Last Rites) in the old church structure when it was atop the hill on Big Bear Boulevard at Forest Road. After moving back up the hill, Patty again greeted visitors, and residents alike at the McDonalds, where she was employed for the last 13 years. She pursued a variety of jobs and activities around the Valley, including house sitting, polling place clerking, babysitting at the Community Church, and a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. She never got a drivers license and walked to her destinations, or rode the bus in her signature red hat to commute to and from work, or to run errands. She was a diligent reader, and her last trip was to the library on the MARTA bus. Her kind friend, Terry Bitts the bus driver, recognized she was in grave distress and rushed her to the Big Bear Hospital from where she took her third, and last, air flight. Patty was a kind, gentle, guileless and unassuming person, who had a smile and bashful giggle for everyone. She was proud of her Big Bear heritage and could think of no place where she would rather be, or people with whom she would rather associate. While Pattys gentle spirit will be forever in the memories of those to whom she is related and acquainted, it is very fitting that it will also live on in those who received the physical gift of life from her at Loma Linda. Patty Ann was preceded in death by her dad, Martin Peter Monte Beaumon, who was originally from Ohio but moved to Big Bear in the Great Depression, and passed on his love of Big Bear to her; her mother, Mary Ruth Beaumon, originally from Philadelphia and New Jersey; and her dear father-in-law Matt Manahan, Sr. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Matt Manahan, Jr.; her mother-in-law and special friend and companion, Evelyn Manahan of Big Bear City; sister Mary Joan Mamie Starr and husband Charles E. Starr III of Acampo, Calif., brother John Walter Johnny Beaumon; sister Claire Eileen Beaumon; sister Elizabeth Gail Betsy Beaumon of Sunnyvale, Calif., brothers-in-law Tom Manahan and wife Helena of Granada Hills, and Tim Manahan and wife Joyce of North Hollywood; niece Lisa Erman and husband Dmitry of Simi Valley; nephew Michael Manahan of Reseda; niece Kristin Fernandez and husband John of Panorama City; niece Kelly Cormier and husband Jim of Medford, Oregon; nephew Charles E. Starr IV and wife Sandi of Acampo; and nephew Sterling Martin Beaumon. Patty is also survived by her very special grand nieces and nephews: Charles E. Starr V; Christopher, Jake, and Michael Cormier; Dustin Fernandez; and Olivia, Benjamin and Noah Erman. She has Beaumon, Smerber, Sim, and Bartello cousins in California, Washington, Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, Missouri, and New Jersey. In-lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Patricia Manahan to the Big Bear Historical Society, PO Box 513, Big Bear City, CA 92314, or OneLegacy, 1701 Orange Tree Lane, Redlands, CA 92374. OneLegacy is an outstanding organization that assisted Patty and the family in being able to give the gift of life to others. In memory of Pattys giving spirit, family and friends are requested to consider the gift of life to others by becoming a designated organ and tissue donor.
