The Downey Eagle May 28, 1999 Volume 7 Number 14 Former Downey purchasing chief Merrill Victor Max SEQUIM, Washington-Services were held May 3 in Sequim, Washington, for Merrill Victor Max, former purchasing manager for the City of Downey, who died in Sequim after a six-month battle with prostate cancer and congestive heart failure. He was 65, born in Detroit, Michigan, was known for his quick wit, and kept his sense of humor to the end. Son of Abraham Herbert and Sadie Faye (Rycus) Max, he moved to California where he married Sandi Sevon in Los Angeles in 1961. He liked helping others and was a member of the Downey Exchange Club and its program for prevention of child abuse; the Association for Retarded Citizens; and the Reading Program at the Downey City Library. He loved bonsai and held memberships in both the Orange Empire Bonsai Society of La Mirada, and the Sequim-Dungeness, Washington Bonsai Society. A City of Downey employee since 1981, he retired in 1993, moving to Sequim where he built his dream mountain home and found "Mocha," his chocolate Labrador retriever who was his constant companion. Survivors include his wife; a son, Andrew of Bothell, Washington; a daughter, Leslie Simmons of Austin, Texas; sisters Resa Brenner of San Diego and Lois Sein of Beverly Hills; and three grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, City employees have established the Victor Max Memorial Fund at the Downey City Library. Friends wishing to participate may contact the Library.
