Military honors for Lacy Lee Mayfield, 87
DOWNEY-Full military honors were held for Lacy Lee Mayfield on March 29 at Rose Hills Memorial 
Park in Whittier. 
A Downey resident for 44 years, he was 87, and retired in 1970 after 35 years employment with 
Mueller Company. 
He loved to hunt, fish, camp, garden and spend time with his family, and was an avid story teller 
about his life. 
He had a lighthearted sense of humor and was known as the "neighborhood watch dog," since he 
always was looking out for and helping family, friends and neighbors. 
A veteran of the U.S. Navy and World War II, he served on the USS Sibley, an amphibious personnel 
attack ship. He was a Motor Machinist Mate 3rd Class and was assigned to an assault landing craft 
that transported troops and supplies to enemy beaches and evacuated casualties to hospital ships. 
He saw action at Guadalcanal, Okinawa, Saipan and Iwo Jima, where he witnessed the American flag 
raised on Mt. Suribachi. At Iwo Jima he was in the first wave of boats in the invasion of Red Beach. 
He was preceded in death by LaVerne Mayfield in 1999 after 60 years of marriage, and his son, Larry 
Mayfield of Lake Naciemento in 1996. 
Survivors include his son, Greg Mayfield and daughter-in-law Paula Mayfield of Downey; grandchildren 
Christy Mayfield of Aliso Viejo, Brian Mayfield of Downey, Michael Brant Mayfield of Los Angeles, Linda 
Lopez of Nevada; and three great-grandchildren, Jessica, Joshua and Marie of Nevada.
