The Downey Eagle May 8, 1998 Volume 6 Number 11 Michael McCallum, M.D. mourned by many here HOUSTON, Texas-Funeral services were held at the Rainbow Chapel of Rose Hills in Whittier Monday, May 4, for Michael H. McCallum, M.D., who died in Spring, Texas, April 26. He was the son of Ernie and Helen McCallum of McCallum Realty in Downey. He received his medical degree from UCLA, and was drafted in 1966 by the U.S. Army during his internship at St. Lukes Hospital in Denver, Colorado. He spent seven months in the jungle serving as Squadron Surgeon for 1,200 men, then several more months in a large evacuation unit assisting with trauma surgery. After Vietnam and after completing orthopedic residency training and a family practice, he "migrated" to emergency medicine during that specialty's infancy in the 1970s. Dr. McCallum re-entered the Army and remained on active duty as a Lt. Colonel until 1984. He served as Commander of the Health Clinic in Stuttgart, Germany. He commanded the Coordinator-Combat Casualty Care Course for Army, Navy and Air Force physicians at the Academy of Health Sciences at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. And he was the Chief of Special Forces Section and Chief, Department of Operational and Emergency Medicine and Director of Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Ft. Hood, Texas. In January, 1985, he became the Medical Director for the City of Austin (Texas) Emergency Medical Services Department, and Medical Director for the Brackinridge Hospital. In May, 1985, he instituted a helicopter program at the hospital called Starflight. Dr. McCallum next chose to work as a staff physician at McKenna Memorial Hospital in New Braunfels, Texas, from 1991 to 1993. He came to UT-H Medical School in December, 1993, became active Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine in October, 1994. He is survived by three sons, M. Shannon McCallum and wife Elizabeth, Timothy McCallum and Matthew McCallum; a daughter, Carrie Mazhar and husband Tony; a sister, Diana L. Mignotte and husband Henry; a brother, Patrick McCallum and wife Danna; and two grandchildren. Dr. McCallum was the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal X2, the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal. He served in Saudi Arabia as the U.S. Army Surgeon General's Team Chief to develop a National Emergency Medical System. He was certified by the American College of Emergency Physicians, and made numerous presentations at emergency medicine and aeromedical conferences throughout the U.S. Burial followed at Rose Hills cemetery in Whittier. Arrangements were by Morrow's Pico Rivera Mortuary.
