McGraw died at Valley View Nursing Home in Hamilton, Montana on Friday, August 22, 2003. She was born on September 3, 1916 to Rev. John D. Good and his wife Rachal, in Johnstown, PA. She received her B.A. in Education at Otterbein College and later her M.A. in Special Education at California State University. After college she went to work for J.C. Penny in McKeesport, PA and was later transferred to New York City. There to consult and teach advertising and display of merchandise as well as the writing of sales manuals It was during this time that she met and married Oscar B. McGraw in 1944. They moved to California to raise a family. Lora worked for a time as a school teacher then went to work for Dr. Donald Getz, O.D., Van Nuys, CAon May 1, 1963. She worked for him for 23 years as an Optometric Assistant and was tremendously happy and challenged. She retired from his office in 1986. She was the recipient of the Jewel Young Award, 1986 and subsequently had an annual award set up in her name "The Lora McGraw Award" that is presented to the outstanding vision therapist of the year by the Optometric Extension Program of Southern California. Lora was a guest speaker at several Optometric conferences and forums and author of many articles, papers and numerous books related to her field. In- cluding her well received "Guiding Strabismus Therapy" published in 1991. She opened her own successful educational remediation office in Frazier Park, after her retirement. In addition to remedial help to those who needed it, she offered many well attended training seminars for optomet-ric assistants. After retiring a second time from her office in Frazier Park, she and her daughter Rachal moved to California City and later to Truckee, CA. After suffering a stroke she moved to Hamilton, MT in March, 2003, to be close to her daughter, Lora, Jr. She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Rachal and brothers John, Jr. and Ray. Survivors include her daughter Lora, Jr. of Victor, MT, son David, Reno, NV, son Oscar B., Carlisle, IN and sister, Martha, Akron, OH. along with many special cousins and nieces. A memorial is planned during church services on August 31, 2003 at 9 a.m. at Church of the Mountains UMC, P.O. Box 1209, Truckee, CA 96160. 530.587.4407. In lieu of flowers a donation to Church of the Mountains building fund or a charity of your choice is appreciated. To be sure, the number of lives touched by Lora is almost as numerous as the stars. She will be missed but never forgotten.
