Ij 1999.. He was born in Los Lunas, NM, Sept. 30, 1926. He was born to Celso and Estela Montoya. Montoya was raised on a farm with his brother, Triney. After school, he was able to follow his life-long dream to join the U.S. Air Force and travel. After being stationed in many different states, Alaska, Georgia and Texas, he arrived at Edwards AFB and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1952. Montoya resided in Mojave and was an active member of the American Legion, volunteering for various community events. He worked for Mojave Desert Distributing and later became the owner of Mojave Ice House in the 70s. In his spare time, Montoya was an entertainer and played the bass guitar. As a member of several rock bands, he could be seen throughout the desert area in clubs, store openings, Fourth of July celebrations and weddings. He became the owner of several Mexican restaurants in California, Washington and Surrey, BC. Montoya suffered a stroke and resided at the AV Convalescent Hospital, in Lancaster for the remaining years of his life. There, he enjoyed visits from many of his friends and family. Those who knew Max knew his gallant smile, cheerful disposition and his love of life, family and friends. Max was every one's friend. He will be greatly missed. Montoya is survived by his children, Lily Mashouri of San Diego, CA; Mary Drewing, Redmond, WA; Sandra Okimura, Hilo, HI; Triney Beddow, Bellingham, WA; Gene Montoya, Los Lunas, NM. He is also survived by his mother, Estela Abeyta, Los Lunas; NM; brother, Triney Montoya; four sisters, Francis Abeyta, Dorothy Abeyta, Diana Montoya, Nellie Pedilla, all residing in New Mexico; his grandchildren, Amy Aguirre, Tony Montoya, Michele Montoya, Ryan Montoya, Jade Montoya, Juliet, Terry and Jerry Hughes, Adam and Rochelle Mashouri, Mindy, Melinda, Molly, Maria Drewing, and Malia Okimura; great grandchildren, Ashley Hughes, Karlie, Jordan, Julia Montoya, Caymen Aguirre. Montoya was preceded in death by Celco Montoya, his father, and Eloisa Garcia, his Grandmother, as well as a son, Max J. Montoya who died Feb. 10, 1998. Viewing and family rosary will be conducted Oct. 22, 1999, 2-5 p.m. at Stickel Mortuary, 2201 Inyo St., Mojave, CA. Funeral services will be held on Oct. 23, 1999, 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 15382 Myer Rd., Mojave with burial following at Mojave Cemetery. There will be a reception after the ceremony at the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Mojave Hall. God saw that you are getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put His arms around Max and whispered, "Come with Me." With tearful eyes, we watched you suffer and saw you fade away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A loving heart stopped beating. You are now at peaceful rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.
