The Downey Eagle September 21, 2001 Volume 9 Number 31 Mass held for Kathleen Murphy on Tuesday DOWNEY-A funeral mass was held Sept. 18 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for Kathleen "Midgie" Murphy, a homemaker who was active in youth baseball. She was 60, born June 1, 1941 to parents Roger and Dorothy Lund in Cleveland, Ohio, and died Sept. 13 at her Downey home. The family moved to Downey in 1952. She graduated from Pius X High School in 1959. While attending high school she met her husband, Brian Murphy. They were married on July 6, 1963 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. In 1981 she and her husband founded the Senior League and Big League Division of Northwest Downey Little League. The Senior League was for boys 13-15 years old and the Big League was for youngsters 16-18. At that time the program served the entire city, consisting of 13 regular season teams in two divisions. From 1981 to 1986 her Senior Division All-Star teams won three District championships, one Section championship and were Division Finalists in 1982. Downey Big League teams won three consecutive District championships from 1984 through 1986. During her years running the program hundreds of Downey teens had the opportunity to play baseball. Survivors include her husband, Brian; her father, Roger Lund; her son, Roger; her daughter-in-law, Kimberly; and a granddaughter, Brianna Kathleen. Burial followed at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Roland Heights. Father John Maloney officiated. Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
