All persons donating to this site retain the rights to their own work. "Big Bear Grizzly"; Date Unknown A.W. "Woody" Newkirk passed on Sunday, April 24, 2005, in Big Bear City, Calif. He was born in El Centro, Calif. on February 22, 1922. He was a WW II Navy veteran, worked as a carpenter, then became a truck driver by trade. Woody belonged to the BPO Elks Club #1787, the Masonic Lodge #617, the American Legion, CCA Camp Club, and the Big Bear Amateur Radio Club with ham #KB6HIS. He truly loved the sea and became an avid scuba diver. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty; their three daughters: Linda and husband Ed Neuman of Big Bear City, Glenna and Kirk Spindleman of Oceanside, and Jean and Mark Bernhard of Fullerton. He has eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Woody was a very loving, caring person and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Assoc. Per Woody's request, there will be a private family service.
