The Downey Eagle Friday, January 24, 1997 Vol. 4 No. 48 Leslie Vernon Olson is mourned in Downey DOWNEY-Private family services were held for Leslie Vernon Olson, a 35-year Downey resident who was formerly self-employed through the Olson Surveying & Engineering Service. He was 90, born Aug. 9, 1906 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and died Jan. 20 at the Southland Lutheran Home in Norwalk. He was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church and a graduate of USC in Civil Engineering. He was a member of the track team while at USC. He was a member of the Downey Kiwanis Club, Huntington Park Elks, Masonic Lodge and Shrine, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Congress of Surveying and Mapping, California Council of Civil Engineers, Southern California Building Industry Association, and the American Public Works Association. He was president of the Downey Chamber of Commerce in 1969-70, and was a member of the Downey Second Century Foundation. He was honored on Nov. 12, 1985 when the Downey City Council proclaimed it "Leslie Olson Day." He and wife Marilyn traveled extensively overseas since his retirement, but he continued his involvement in Downey Sister Cities. Survivors include his wife, Ivora of Downey; and his daughter, Meredith Jacobson of Glendale.
